Obadiah's Vision by Leaf Erikson

The newest album from Detroit Hip-Hop veteran Leaf Erikson, he gets serious and inspirational on this album as he details his values and lived principles on the 20-minute trip exploring his deepest thoughts. The production is beautiful and somber ranging from minor-key boom bap with hard hitting drums to stripped down orchestral loops and muted percussion. The features are minimal, a verse from the talented up and comer D. Apollo, a prayer from the (Fatt) Father himself, and the incredibly powerful voice of Crystal Rae.

The “soundtrack” is indeed Leaf’s voice, the vocal production is minimalist and keeps Leaf’s lyrics front and center through the album’s runtime, no hooks drowning in effects chains here. The rapper’s ability to emote messages and meditate on spiritual wisdom is the driving thematic force of this record, Leaf’s latest creative arc of grown-man rap sounds just as good as it did on his previous release. 2022’s Briefcases and Sunglasses.
