Black Milk TRONIC Album Release Party

October 28 2008 marked the highly anticipated album release of Detroit’s own Super Producer/MC Black Milk’s TRONIC album. TRONIC is the triumphant follow up to Black’s critically acclaimed “Popular Demand” release (Fat Beats). I was personally on hand (with Nalynn of Ish-Cole Media) at the Shelter (Historic St. Andrews) to catch all the action.

Black Milk, along with a host of Detroit hip-hop notables like Slum Village (T3 & Elzhi), DJ Dez, Maestro (Silent Riot) Danny Brown, Nick Speed (Libido Sounds), Marv Won, Guilty Simpson (Stones Throw), Phat Kat, Fat Ray and others were on hand to perform. The atmosphere was electric as a host of die hard hip hop fans were on hand to participate in the festivities.

The band was tunning up as I arrived and Black was on deck, doing his mic check. I had the opportunity to ask him a couple of questions before the show started when I went to the merch table to pick up my personal copy of the album. To paraphrase…he mentioned that he was really excited about the new release and the opportunity to get on stage and perform for the crowd.

First Performance:

Danny Brown

Danny Brown opened up the night of performances with a lively exhibition of cleverness and rhyme skill that commands the attention of the casual listener. Danny’s subject matter and word play has set him apart as one of Nick Speed’s most gifted protege’s

Second Performance:

Guilty Simpson

Guilty Simpson stepped on stage and ripped the mic, with or without music. Guilty was able to keep his poise and continuity despite sudden technical difficulties with the instrumentals. He ended up rocking a whole song a cappella. The fans showed their appreciation and cheered at the end.

Third Performance:

Slum Village

SV Graced the stage and performed a super hype rendition of “Raise It Up” from Fantastic Vol.2, which is without a doubt a fan Favorite. The crowd errupted when the instrumental came on. It was very difficult for me to take pictures at this point so I just said “Skip It” and got hype like everybody else…

Final Performance:

Black Milk

Black’s performance was accented with the use of both acoustic and electric elements that created the unique blend and vibe that his fan base has grown accustomed to. Black uses acoustic elements often in his composition, so the fact that he included a LIVE band really complemented his show.

Everybody’s hands were up when he started performing “Give The Drummer Sum” and the cat on the drum set was letting loose, which served well in emphasizing the songs most powerful musical element.

Slum Village, Phat Kat, Guilty Simpson, and Fat Ray all joined Black on stage to perform in his set, making the event even more exciting. Black even took to the MPC a couple of times and played electroinic elements which displayed his unique skill as a Producer as well as a performer.

Needless to say the night (as always) was a smashing success. As one of the most gifted and prolific artists to emerge from the “D”, Black is one of many who proves without question that hip-hop has not lost its relevance; that there is yet more to be heard, blessing the masses with his unique ability to create the type of music that touches crate diggers and club hoppers alike.
