TRU Talk with Fatt Father

by Shannon “a TRU 6’2” DeVries

Success is something we each strive for in our own walks of life. For some emcees in the Detroit circle, being a ‘hood star or going on a couple national tours is enough to be successful. Not Fatt Father. He has already toured the nation with some notorious acts like Slum Village and Redman and Method Man, but that isn’t enough. He wants to be able to, “wake up and focus on nothing but music and my kids, of course”.

One of his role models is the late ‘Mayor of Detroit’, Big Proof. “If I can be as successful as Proof and still have the hunger and the drive that he had, I would be satisfied. I mean the day I can watch myself on MTV while I’m chillin’ in a hole in the wall bar like ‘yeah we cut that yesterday’ – to me that’s like you still doin’ you, you haven’t let the game [change] you.” Thus far in his career, Fatts has managed to stay grounded.

In today’s mainstream hip-hop when most song concepts are extreme exaggerations of the truth, Fatt Father keeps his music as real as his life. Fatts said, “People have made it [that] music is so far away from what’s real now.” He spoke of 2Pac’s reality, also one of his role models, who starts a record by telling a female to keep her head up but in the same disc blatantly states he gets around. He stated, “you don’t feel gangster all day – you don’t have to be on no gangster shit when you with your kids. I’m sittin’ here talking to you right now with my son layin’ on my chest. But in four hours I may be in the club slappin’ the shit outta somebody for doin’ something stupid. That’s just the reality of it.”

With the question of where hip-hop is going for Detroit, Fatts said, “The next generation of emcee’s don’t really have a blueprint.” The classics we grew up on, they aren’t here to produce that memorable music. “Our generation was lucky – we were like the last generation to have good music to fall back on. The next generation of Detroit artists ain’t gon’ have a Proof, they’re not gonna have a J. Dilla,” stated Fatt Father. I personally can think of quite a few good role models for upcoming emcee’s in the Detroit scene including the Father of Fatness, although Fatts clarified, “We have a responsibility to teach, but the next people have the responsibility to learn.” He said there are still some young cats in the D who are willing to learn and work hard and there are established emcee’s who are willing to help out the up and comers and share some knowledge. It is just a matter of the bridging the gap, I guess.

Fatts is currently working towards an October release date for his self-titled album “Fatt Father” which will be collectively released by Trick Trick’s label and Fatt’s own. Fatts describes this album similar to a movie, “you gone laugh, you gone cry, you gone think, you gone dance – whatever. I think people are gonna enjoy it.” The album will have guest appearances by a plethora of Detroit classic hit makers including the Fat Killahs members and Trick Trick, Guilty Simpson, K-Deezy, Monica Blaire and production by Black Milk and more. | DetroitRap.com
